Job Description Summary
This position is available within the University of Maryland’s Division of Information Technology (DIT).
The Manager for Critical Infrastructure is responsible for the planning and operation of DIT critical infrastructure at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) and other locations supported by DIT. This includes operations, changes, expansions, and strategic planning of all DIT computer rooms, data centers, campus network hubs, outside cable plant infrastructure, and off-site leased data center space.
The position supervises two full-time Data Center Technicians, and will spend considerable time in hands-on work with the Technicians to care for the infrastructure.
The position interacts with multiple campus departments using DIT Colocation services. The position will liaise with Facilities Management and the Department of Public Safety for support of building utilities in support of critical infrastructure. The position collaborates with service providers (wired and mobile) in support of their infrastructure needs in servicing the College Park campus.
This position will oversee the extensive outside cable plant (OSP) infrastructure on campus. This includes strategic planning and operations of pathways and cable distribution on campus. The position will be involved in major construction projects requiring or modifying the OSP infrastructure.
This position is also responsible for instituting the appropriate controls, processes, and best practices that ensure compliance with UMD, the University System of Maryland, and the State of Maryland audit requirements.
**This position is considered essential and may be required to work at the normal work location or an alternative location during a major catastrophic event, weather emergency, or other operational emergency to help maintain the continuity of University services.**
Physical Demands: Working in a critical facilities requires physical stamina for lifting (30-75 lbs.), standing/walking long hours, and navigating challenging environments (noise, cold/hot temperatures, harsh lighting). Critical facilities may include construction sites, mechanical/electrical spaces, and other non-public spaces that are exceptions to physical ADA requirements. This position must be able to move about challenging spaces. Key physical needs include fine motor skills for cabling, flexibility for working in low racks and cabinets, good balance for ladders, and resilience against hard floors and loud noise.

Minimum Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Experience: Three (3) years experience in data center operations. One (1) year leading or supervising professional staff.
Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
Knowledge of data center facilities, including electrical power supply and distribution, HVAC distribution and load balancing, data center IT load management and fire control systems.
Knowledge of and experience in data center operations in a supervisory or technical leadership position.
Skill in oral and written communication.
Skill in the use of Microsoft Office and Google Suite products.
Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws.
Ability to multitask while demonstrating a commitment to customer service.
Additional Job Details:
Preferences:
- Certified Data Centre Professional (CDCP®), Certified Data Center Technician Professional (CDCTP®), or similar certification in data center operations. A solid understanding of data center IT systems. A basic understanding of data center MEP systems
- BICSI Registered Communications Distribution Designer, BICSI Outside Cable Plant Specialist. Experience with AutoCAD and GIS-mapping products.
- High level of energy, drive, enthusiasm, initiative, creativity and commitment. Ability to work in a busy environment and on own initiative, be self-motivated and flexible.
- Strong organizational and project management skills to effectively lead multiple projects simultaneously and meet tight deadlines
- Strong customer service skills to handle high-pressure situations while effectively troubleshooting with customers.
- Committed to customer satisfaction: exceptional skills in collaboration, consultation, communication, customer support, data analysis, and time management.
Additional Information:
Please note that all positions within the Division of Information Technology (DIT) have an in person component with expected time in our College Park, MD location per week. Telework is not a guaranteed work arrangement.
